My New HTC Touch Pro is keeping me busy!

Htc Touch ProI bought the New HTC Touch Pro 2 weeks back (one of the first few pieces in Hyderabad) and had been very busy with it customizing or playing the gravity games.

Bought it for the price of 32,500/- in Jagdish Market, Hyderabad with bill and warranty. Though it was locked with Idea network, the distributor provided with the unlock code. Also bought an 8GB SDHC memory card so that I don’t have to worry about memory usage for things like MP3s, Photos or Movies.

Personally, I think the phone is great and is upto my expectations or even a little more than my expectations. After my old Samsung SGH E880 died 6 months back, I was using my wife’s Sony Ericsson W580i, she was kind enough to not let me use an old Nokia phone which I am not so comfortable with. Thank You Sweetheart. She says, the purpose of a mobile phone really is to make calls and receive calls. What else would you need from it (when I was looking at options in business phones which are all highly priced)? But never did she discourage me from buying the HTC and now she agrees HTC would be helpful for both of us to check emails on the go and do a lot more than just calls. So we think its worth the 6 month wait (since I knew it was going to launch) though I had other options for a business phone which I ignored.

Anyway, coming to the features, you cant except more than what’s already there on the phone given the exception of the “not the best camera for a premium segment phone (anyway, its a business phone)” and the “battery backup which lasts only for a day”. But developers at the XDA forum say that the custom ROMs and a few tweaks on the phone will improve the performance of the battery (I didn’t test that yet). But I see a lot of people giving good feedback on the customizations.

Few things that I love on this phone are:

  1. The resolution (VGA). I love that!
  2. The full QWERTY keyboard. I think I am atleast 5 times faster now when it comes to sending messages, typing names or sending emails on a mobile phone.
  3. The Touch Flo App, its graphics and The Touch Screen itself.
  4. Browsing and emailing, Best in all phones till now which I have seen.
  5. Better hardware, so better performance when you are running resource hungry applications.
  6. The TV Out (haven’t tested this yet).
  7. The G-sensor based games: Teeter (default on Phone) and Resco Bubbles (downloaded one), I don’t know if there are more of these games, need to explore that. Also, the Pocket Uno (touch based game) is really good on this phone.
  8. And all those Microsoft mobile features which makes this phone a tiny laptop.

I would like to thank the people at GSMArena.com for their detailed review which really helped me in taking a decision in September to buy the phone.(Yes there are hundreds of other reviews and videos but this one is really detailed). That’s really very very useful review guys.

“The Touch Pro quite deserves every penny you spend on it. There is no better device on the market in this class (yet) and if this is the kind of phone you are after – just go for it.”

Thanks a Ton Guys!

So that’s about it. What do you think of your HTC Touch Pro?

Hi Vamsi,
I also want to buy this phone, but wanted to take an opinion who has used this in india. And thanks to you for your wonderful comments. So do you use your phone on other network then Idea ? How difficult is to unlock it from idea network and does it still hold all the warranty if you use it with different service provider ?

You can answer me at my id singhal(dot)maneesh(at)yahoo(dot)com

Thanks a lot

Hi Maneesh.
Thanks for stopping by.

Yes I am using the HTC Touch Pro on Airtel.
Unlocking is nothing but just entering a 7-8 digit code which the seller provides and he himself will do this and give the phone (ofcourse he has to open the box to do that. You can start using the phone on any network almost immediately. Yes the Warranty still holds.

Dont forget to charge the phone before using also discharge completely(80% is fine i guess). Do this 3-5 times before you start using the phone. To discharge play songs or something battery hungry which can finish this process 2-3 days and this will ensure your battery will have a better life.

Good luck.
Let me know your thoughts on the phone after you start using it.

Hi Vamsi,
Thanks a lot for your reply. I got inspired by you, and bought the phone yesterday. Yes, its a very good device indeed.
Well, I wanted to ask you one thing — Did you upgrade your ROM ? if yes, then from where and how… because I couldnt find ROM upgrade option enabled in HTC site now.
My current ROM is 1.95.720.2 WWE.

Hope you dont mind me bugging you again and again.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Maneesh, I am glad I’ve influenced someone to buy this phone.

About the ROM, I didn’t upgrade it.

Initially I thought I should upgrade it for sure because of the general outcry on this phone. But as I started using it, I was thinking does it need an upgrade really? People seem to complain a lot about the battery backup and the apps eating up the battery in few hours. However I didn’t find the battery backup really that bad. Its for sure supporting for a day, until I recharge it every night. If you want to use it without upgrading, just make sure you are closing programs after opening. Note that clicking on the “X” in the right corner does not close the program but just minimises. There is also setting to choose if you want to close the program when clicked X.

On an average day i make somewhere between 5-10 calls, listen to some music (an hour atleast over the speaker), play some games (an hour or 2) and check emails. Not bad nah?

Initially you might be disappointed with the battery backup because anyone and everyone abuses that kind of a phone and you can’t stop it. So don’t panic when the battery dies after few hours.

By the way, i don’t mind you bugging me.

And hey, how much did you get it for and where? I am not aware if all stores are selling the Pro now. Because when i bought, none of them had and some don’t even know that there is a model like that and every store tries to sell the Diamond after knowing Pro is similar. But they don’t understand that memory and the keyboard are 2 things that some people love to have.

Earlier i’ve never use to send SMSes. Now i think i am doing 3 on an average day.

Whats your usage like?

Hi Vamsi,
Thanks a lot for your reply. Even I am thinking now about the real need of ROM upgrade. Only thing I wanted was the sprite backup. But I think if I go for a older version of sprite backup, it will get installed.
Anyways, I really am loving this device. And battery backup is better than my expectations. Well, these days I am in many experiments… so initially it ate up all the battery in 5 hours only.. but now it is running easily for 1 day. I make/recv. about 5-10 calls a day… 5 sms a day… some music… some browsing through wifi .. and a very little gaming… till now. But I think I am going to use this phone more and more in the coming days. Btw, have you put some tweaks or apps. in the phone… Well, I did… touchlockpro and advance config and registry editor etc. for various obvious reasons.
Btw, there are couple of things I couldnt solve in this -
1) There is a delay in recieving the call. The caller gets atleast two rings before my phone starts ringing. Any idea ?
2) FM radio doesnt work ?
3) Ringer volume is quite low… is there a way to increase this ?
4) Also have you put any anti virus on it ?

Thanks a ton!
Maneesh

Oh ya, I bought it in Noida. And it is for 31800/- + unlocking charges (500).
I am very sure it is available in 29K or 30K in other places, but I didnt explore many places.
