Rusty Brick talks about why Ugly Sites Earn More With Google AdSense.
It says “people land on the site, and immediately want to click off. They find the nearest ad, and most attractive part of the page, which happens to be the AdSense ad, and clicks off. Phew, they are saved and they move on to a real dating site, that is both professional looking and functional.â€
Well, thats true. We come across lots of sites which are made for nothing but to display adsense and make users click on them. Some sites dont even have enough content to read but will have enough ads to click. And as we know, these ads are tempting because they are written by professionals. Well, thats a part of my job too. I mean writing and optimizing ads to make more sense or to be straight, to increase the CTR. Well, as the arguement says, these sites can be spam but users endup on high quality sites. the visitor gets what he wants, Google make money and the webmaster using adsense also makes money. To me, may be thats the way it should go! may be it can be called as an win-win situation?
For those kinds of sites, the question is how do users get there to begin with.
Anyway, once a web site is popular, we can turn to conventional pricing for online ads. Charge the client for the ad we put up on the site.
Pricing for online ads is taking a new turn – pricing is based on how many pixels the ad is using up. The below site for instance, claims they make million dollars – because there are million pixels on that page and they charge $1 per pixel. The page is so clumsy, not sure what value the visitors to that page will find in there. But its working for owners of that site, so who wants to complain.

With Ajax, there is so much potential to these sites. On mouse-over, we can show more information abt that ad.- as much as the client wants us to display.

firstly users get there most of the times from search engines or links at other sites and yes, as a site gets popular, there can be a potantial for finding advertisers or sponsers.
I’m very much aware of the pixel ad concept. For milliondollarhomepage.com it worked great because of the hype. At one stage, it got bombed by hackers. It made not a millio but i think millions. i heard that many $1 space ads were sold for thousands of dollars on ebay and other places. Thats not an issue anyway. The site was made to rise funds for a charity so whatever comes in goes for a good purpose and thats very impressive.
and hey i know a person who bought pixels at milliondollarhomepag, he should be one of the first 100 ads. he says there were millions of clicks on his ad and made lot of business because of that.
The same concept works well for popular sites when a part of the page is used for pixel ads.
may be one day, i will own a site which sells of a whole block of pixel ads. lets see!
